The Fat Years: A Novel [Deckle Edge] [Hardcover] reviews:
- Engrossing and eye-opening
The Fat Years is a motivating and illuminating novel set within the terribly close to way forward for China. The plot involves a gaggle individuals|of individuals} making an attempt to find a missing month and determine what has happened to the people of China. it is surprising in portraying the depths of the role China's government plays in everyday life, and it is a plea to the citizens of China to awaken to the consumerism that has created a zombie-fied society of perpetually happy individuals - not not like what America has become on behalf of me.
Chan Koonchung writes with a detective novelist's brevity and function but still manages to dispense knowledge and important observations in to the combination, both keeping the story moving in addition as giving the reader something so much deeper to think about beyond the surface plot problems. whereas this is often a work of fiction, it is rooted in facts and therefore the fictionalized future events do not seem thus unlikely to me, albeit down the road a bit.
The Fat Years is compelling, fast-moving, funny, insightful, cautionary, tender, genuine, and thoroughly value looking into. there is plenty to digest, notably within the final quarter or thus of the book, but you may be glad you probably did.

The Fat Years: A Novel [Deckle Edge] [Hardcover] Description:
Banned in China, this controversial and politically charged novel tells the story of the search for an entire month erased from official Chinese history.

Beijing, sometime in the near future: a month has gone missing from official records. No one has any memory of it, and no one could care less—except for a small circle of friends, who will stop at nothing to get to the bottom of the sinister cheerfulness and amnesia that have possessed the Chinese nation. When they kidnap a high-ranking official and force him to reveal all, what they learn—not only about their leaders, but also about their own people—stuns them to the core. It is a message that will astound the world.

A kind of Brave New World reflecting the China of our times, The Fat Years is a complex novel of ideas that reveals all too chillingly the machinations of the postmodern totalitarian state, and sets in sharp relief the importance of remembering the past to protect the future.
